Thursday Grizzly Attacks

2 separate grizzly bear attacks left 4 people with injures.  The first attack happened near Canyon village in Yellowstone National Park.

A group of four people hiking grizzly bear cub around 11:30 a.m., the parks service said. A sow then appeared and attacked two of the hikers. They managed to escape when one of the hikers deployed his bear spray and both bears left the scene.  This attack is purely a sow grizzly protecting her cub and no action will be taken against the bear. Both hikers are being treated for minor injures.

The second attack occurred when 2 independent contractors doing habitat assessment near Island Park, ID surprised a sleeping grizzly bear.  The surprised bear charged on of the men and bit him on the thigh and side knocking him down.  The other individual then tried to spray his bear spray but the bear attacked his 2 hands. The men managed to escape and other workers were able to transport them to Madison Memorial Hospital in Rexburg, ID.  The men both suffered treatable, but substantial industries.  The biggest risk being infection as a bears mouth and teeth are typically not very clean.
