January 3, 2018A Montana elk hunter was mauled by a female grizzly bear on Friday, September 14th in the Madison range of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. The hunter from Pennsylvania and his wife where cow calling on the Indian Creek Trail South of Ennis when the bear appeared 15 yards away from the hunter.
The grizzly bear with 2 cubs charged and bit hunter before leaving area. The hunter faced no life threatening injuries. Both hunters were carrying bear spray but were unable to dispense in time.
Bears are often drawn to the calls of elk. Many times this signals a food source. It is likely the bear was hunting elk as well.
